Local coverage
Watford is a straightforward run from our Harrow base, and it is one of the towns we cover regularly along with Bushey, Croxley Green, Rickmansworth, Abbots Langley and Garston. Surveys are free and can be arranged in the evening up to 8pm on weekdays or on a Saturday morning.
The town's housing runs across every era. There are older solid-wall cottages and terraces around the centre and in Oxhey, substantial Victorian and Edwardian villas in Cassiobury, large interwar estates through North Watford and Garston, and a great deal of post-war and modern development including flat conversions in and around the centre.
Water is a defining feature locally. The River Colne and the Grand Union Canal run through the area, and there are low-lying pockets and properties on sloping ground where water runs towards the building rather than away from it. Those conditions push more water at the base of walls and into cellars than a flat, well-drained site ever would.
We also see a lot of period property in the surrounding villages where soft brick and lime mortar have been repointed or rendered in hard cement, which traps moisture rather than shedding it.
Victorian cottages and terraces, Edwardian villas, interwar and post-war semis, converted flats and period village properties.
Rising damp in older solid walls, wet cellars in low-lying or sloping sites, and penetrating damp through cement-rendered elevations.

Services in Watford

A failed damp proof course is diagnosed, treated with an accredited Sovereign or Wykamol system and replastered to a decoration-ready finish, priced as a fixed sum before any work starts, and guaranteed for ten years.
Rising damp treatment in Watford
Damp that worsens after rain is coming in from somewhere. We find the route: pointing, render, sills, gutters or roof detail; correct it, then repair the wall inside. Free survey, fixed price, no guesswork.
Penetrating damp treatment in Watford
Find out exactly what is causing the damp, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs, in writing, at a fixed price, with no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed.
Damp surveys & diagnosis in Watford
Below-ground rooms need a waterproofing system, not a coat of damp-seal paint. Membrane and cementitious tanking specified to suit the structure, installed as an approved Sovereign and Wykamol contractor, with a free survey and a fixed price.
Structural waterproofing & tanking in Watford
The replaster is half of any damp repair. We remove contaminated plaster, apply the specified salt-retardant system and leave a flat, decoration-ready finish, as part of a fixed price, by the same contractor that treated the wall.
Plastering in Watford
Cracked, hollow or blown render holds water against your masonry. We identify why it failed, repair or renew it with a system suited to the substrate, and fix the damp it was causing inside.
Rendering in Watford
Open joints and spalled brick faces are the most common route for penetrating damp. We cut out properly, repoint in a mortar matched to your brick, and replace masonry that has broken down.
Brickworks & repointing in Watford
Helical stainless bars bonded into the bed joints tie cracked brickwork back into one structure, a repair carried out from the outside, without rebuilding the wall, and finished so the crack disappears.
Brick stitching in Watford
Damp repairs rarely stop at the damp. We carry out the associated building work: masonry, render, plaster, joinery repairs and making good, so the job finishes with one contractor accountable for all of it.
General building in Watford
Treatment stops the damp; remedial work makes the room liveable again. Plaster, joinery, floors, decoration preparation and making good, completed by the contractor that did the specialist work, at a fixed price.

Local damp problems
Two things shape Watford's damp problems: the age spread of the housing and the local ground and water conditions. Older solid-wall property has no cavity and often has a slate DPC at the end of its life, while interwar housing has early cavity construction that is easily bridged.
The River Colne, the canal and the area's sloping topography mean plenty of sites where surface and ground water move towards buildings. Where drainage is poor or ground levels have been raised, that water ends up in the base of the wall or in the cellar.
Older Watford cottages and terraces show tide marks, salting and perished plaster where the original slate DPC has cracked or been breached.
Where ground falls towards the property, cellars and lower-ground rooms take water under pressure and need structural waterproofing, not paint.
Hard cement finishes applied to period masonry crack and trap moisture, spalling brick faces and pushing damp inwards.
Debris and mortar droppings at the cavity base in 1930s estate housing carry water across to the inner leaf.
Blocked gullies, missing drainage to patios and drives, and ground raised above DPC level put standing water against walls.
Failed flashings, valley gutters, verges and defective flat roofs on extensions produce damp at ceiling and upper-wall level.

In detail
The pattern of genuine rising damp is consistent: a tide mark at a fairly even height, salt deposits, plaster that sounds hollow, peeling paint at skirting level and skirtings soft on the back face. Where the survey confirms it, the treatment is an injected chemical damp proof course using an accredited Sovereign or Wykamol system plus salt-retardant replastering.
Replastering is not optional. Old plaster holds hygroscopic salts that continue drawing moisture from the air, so a wall can remain visibly damp even after a new DPC has stopped the actual rise.
Before specifying treatment we rule out bridging and drainage faults, which are common on Watford sites with raised patios, new drives or ground sloping towards the building. Correcting those is frequently cheaper and solves the problem outright.
The local topography and watercourses mean below-ground rooms here are often genuinely wet rather than just musty. Making a cellar usable means designing for water arriving under pressure: a cementitious tanking system bonded to sound masonry, or a cavity drain membrane with a perimeter drainage channel discharging to a gravity drain or a sump and pump.
We detail the vulnerable points properly, floor-to-wall junctions, service penetrations, steps and reveals, because those are where basement waterproofing fails. Where a pump is required we specify it for the volume of water the space actually takes.
Waterproof paint and damp-sealing coatings are not a solution for a wet Watford cellar. They resist nothing when water is being pushed through the structure.
A lot of the period property around Watford and the neighbouring villages has been repointed or rendered in hard cement at some point. On soft handmade brick with lime mortar that causes damage: moisture is forced to leave through the brick face rather than the joint, so faces spall and the wall holds water.
Our approach is to match the repair to the wall, appropriate mortar mixes, breathable render where suitable, replacing badly spalled brick, and correcting sill and drip details. Where cracking has opened a path for water we stitch masonry with helical bars rather than simply filling the crack.
Damp flagged in a homebuyer report or valuation holds up transactions. The free survey gives you a clear statement of cause and a written fixed-price quotation, which is usually what is needed to agree a way forward with a buyer, seller or lender.
Where we carry out the treatment, the 10-year workmanship guarantee and the 10-year QANW insurance-backed guarantee give the documentation that follows the property.
As well as Watford we cover Middlesex, Harrow and the neighbouring towns, London and West London, Brent, Slough, Buckinghamshire, High Wycombe and Surrey.
