Old buildings treated as old buildings
Solid walls with lime mortar and no original DPC need compatible, breathable repairs. Hard cement and blanket injection can make them worse.

Local coverage
Buckinghamshire is a natural extension of our Middlesex and Harrow base, reached along the A413 and M40. We work across the south of the county in particular: Amersham, Chesham, the Chalfonts, Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross, Great Missenden, Denham and Marlow, and further north towards Princes Risborough and Aylesbury.
The property here is older and more varied than in the suburbs. Brick-and-flint cottages, timber-framed and rendered village houses, Victorian and Edwardian brick terraces in the market towns, substantial interwar and mid-century detached housing in the commuter belt, and converted barns and outbuildings.
Much of it sits on the Chiltern chalk, on sloping ground, with structures whose original construction relied on breathing rather than sealing. That combination means damp here is usually about water management and breathability rather than a simple failed DPC.
Because these properties often have no damp proof course at all by design, the wrong treatment can do real harm. Our free survey establishes what the building was built to do before we recommend anything.
Brick-and-flint and rendered cottages, solid-wall village houses, market-town terraces, interwar and mid-century detached homes, and converted outbuildings.
Damp in solid-wall cottages, water running off sloping ground into buildings, wet cellars and stores, and failed cement render on old walls.
Where a wall was built to breathe, we specify repairs that let it, rather than sealing moisture inside the masonry.
Services in Buckinghamshire

A failed damp proof course is diagnosed, treated with an accredited Sovereign or Wykamol system and replastered to a decoration-ready finish, priced as a fixed sum before any work starts, and guaranteed for ten years.
Rising damp treatment in Buckinghamshire
Damp that worsens after rain is coming in from somewhere. We find the route: pointing, render, sills, gutters or roof detail; correct it, then repair the wall inside. Free survey, fixed price, no guesswork.
Penetrating damp treatment in Buckinghamshire
Find out exactly what is causing the damp, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs, in writing, at a fixed price, with no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed.
Damp surveys & diagnosis in Buckinghamshire
Below-ground rooms need a waterproofing system, not a coat of damp-seal paint. Membrane and cementitious tanking specified to suit the structure, installed as an approved Sovereign and Wykamol contractor, with a free survey and a fixed price.
Structural waterproofing & tanking in Buckinghamshire
The replaster is half of any damp repair. We remove contaminated plaster, apply the specified salt-retardant system and leave a flat, decoration-ready finish, as part of a fixed price, by the same contractor that treated the wall.
Plastering in Buckinghamshire
Cracked, hollow or blown render holds water against your masonry. We identify why it failed, repair or renew it with a system suited to the substrate, and fix the damp it was causing inside.
Rendering in Buckinghamshire
Open joints and spalled brick faces are the most common route for penetrating damp. We cut out properly, repoint in a mortar matched to your brick, and replace masonry that has broken down.
Brickworks & repointing in Buckinghamshire
Helical stainless bars bonded into the bed joints tie cracked brickwork back into one structure, a repair carried out from the outside, without rebuilding the wall, and finished so the crack disappears.
Brick stitching in Buckinghamshire
Damp repairs rarely stop at the damp. We carry out the associated building work: masonry, render, plaster, joinery repairs and making good, so the job finishes with one contractor accountable for all of it.
General building in Buckinghamshire
Treatment stops the damp; remedial work makes the room liveable again. Plaster, joinery, floors, decoration preparation and making good, completed by the contractor that did the specialist work, at a fixed price.

Chiltern plots often shed water towards the building. We look at levels, drainage and land drainage before treating a wall.

Local damp problems
The county's damp problems come from three directions: the age and construction of the buildings, the ground they sit on, and modern alterations that changed how they handle moisture.
Many older Buckinghamshire houses were built with solid walls, lime mortar and no damp proof course, designed to absorb moisture and release it again. When they are rendered in cement, sealed with modern paint, or have their floors covered with impermeable finishes, that moisture has nowhere to go and shows up internally.
Cottages and village houses built to breathe show low-level damp when modern impermeable finishes trap moisture in the wall.
Hard render and repointing on soft brick, flint or chalk-based walls cracks, holds water and spalls the surface behind it.
On Chiltern hillsides, surface and subsurface water runs towards buildings, loading the base of walls and any below-ground space.
Gardens, terraces and driveways built up against old walls put soil and water directly against masonry.
Cellars, dairies and outbuilding stores were never designed for habitable use and need proper structural waterproofing.
New glazing, insulation and sealed chimneys in old houses cut ventilation sharply, producing mould on cold surfaces.
Our process
We inspect the property, identify the actual cause of the damp and explain it in plain terms. No charge, no obligation.

In detail
The starting question in a Buckinghamshire cottage is not how bad the rising damp is, but whether the wall ever had a damp proof course. Many did not, and were never meant to: lime mortar, permeable plaster and breathable finishes allowed moisture to move in and back out again.
When those walls are cement rendered, sealed with modern masonry paint or lined with impermeable materials, the moisture balance breaks and damp appears internally. The fix is often to remove what is trapping the moisture and reinstate breathable finishes, not to inject the wall.
Where a chemical damp proof course genuinely is appropriate, usually in later brick construction with a failed slate or bitumen DPC, we install accredited Sovereign or Wykamol systems and follow with salt-retardant replastering, because salt left in old plaster keeps the surface damp regardless.
On sloping plots the most effective work is frequently outside the building. Regrading so ground falls away from walls, forming drainage channels, adding land drainage above the building, clearing and correcting gullies, and lowering ground that has crept above DPC level all reduce the water arriving at the structure.
That work is cheaper and more durable than treating a wall that will simply keep being loaded. We look for it at survey and say so when it is the real answer.
Buckinghamshire houses often have cellars, dairies or half-buried stores that people want to use as utility rooms, gyms, offices or wine stores. Those spaces need structural waterproofing designed for water under pressure, cementitious tanking bonded to sound masonry, or a cavity drain membrane with perimeter drainage and gravity or pumped discharge.
Which approach suits depends on the construction and how much water arrives. In rubble, flint or irregular masonry a membrane system is often the more reliable route because it manages water rather than trying to hold it back through an uneven substrate.
Repairs to Buckinghamshire masonry need to suit the original material. We repoint using appropriate mixes, cut out failed cement render and replace it with a suitable breathable system where that is right for the wall, replace badly spalled brick, and reinstate the sill and drip details that keep water off the elevation.
Where cracking has opened a route for water, often through movement on clay-and-chalk transitions or at extension junctions, helical brick stitching restores continuity across the joints without rebuilding the wall.
We cover south Buckinghamshire most frequently, and also work in High Wycombe, Slough, Middlesex, Harrow, Watford, London, West London and Surrey.
Calls are taken Monday to Friday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 1pm. Note that for listed buildings and conservation areas you should check consent requirements before work starts; we will flag where we think that applies.

Not necessarily. Many old walls were built to breathe, and the damp is often caused by cement render, sealed finishes or external levels. The survey determines whether injection is appropriate at all.
Yes: appropriate mortar mixes and breathable finishes where the wall requires them, instead of hard cement that traps moisture.
Yes: cementitious tanking or a cavity drain membrane system with perimeter drainage and, where needed, a sump and pump.
