Local coverage
High Wycombe is at the northern edge of our regular coverage, reached along the M40 and A404 from Harrow, and we work across the town and the surrounding villages including Hazlemere, Downley, Totteridge, Sands, Booker, Loudwater, Flackwell Heath, Penn and Marlow.
The town's housing runs from Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the centre and the old furniture-trade districts, through large interwar and post-war estates on the valley sides, to modern development and converted flats. Many of the older terraces are built on slopes, with one side of the house partially cut into the hill.
That hillside geometry is the single biggest local factor. Where a wall is retaining ground on one side, whether formally designed as a retaining wall or just built into the slope, it is in permanent contact with wet soil, and internal damp on that elevation is the predictable result.
The area also has a lot of chalk and flint construction, rendered elevations and older solid walls, all of which need repairs matched to the material rather than a standard specification.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces on sloping plots, interwar and post-war estate housing, rendered and flint village property, and converted flats.
Damp on earth-retaining elevations, wet cellars and under-stairs stores, failed render, and penetrating damp on exposed valley-side walls.
We look at levels, surface water routes and drainage before treating a wall, because on a slope that is often where the problem starts.
Services in High Wycombe

A failed damp proof course is diagnosed, treated with an accredited Sovereign or Wykamol system and replastered to a decoration-ready finish, priced as a fixed sum before any work starts, and guaranteed for ten years.
Rising damp treatment in High Wycombe
Damp that worsens after rain is coming in from somewhere. We find the route: pointing, render, sills, gutters or roof detail; correct it, then repair the wall inside. Free survey, fixed price, no guesswork.
Penetrating damp treatment in High Wycombe
Find out exactly what is causing the damp, what it takes to fix it, and what it costs, in writing, at a fixed price, with no charge for the visit and no obligation to proceed.
Damp surveys & diagnosis in High Wycombe
Below-ground rooms need a waterproofing system, not a coat of damp-seal paint. Membrane and cementitious tanking specified to suit the structure, installed as an approved Sovereign and Wykamol contractor, with a free survey and a fixed price.
Structural waterproofing & tanking in High Wycombe
The replaster is half of any damp repair. We remove contaminated plaster, apply the specified salt-retardant system and leave a flat, decoration-ready finish, as part of a fixed price, by the same contractor that treated the wall.
Plastering in High Wycombe
Cracked, hollow or blown render holds water against your masonry. We identify why it failed, repair or renew it with a system suited to the substrate, and fix the damp it was causing inside.
Rendering in High Wycombe
Open joints and spalled brick faces are the most common route for penetrating damp. We cut out properly, repoint in a mortar matched to your brick, and replace masonry that has broken down.
Brickworks & repointing in High Wycombe
Helical stainless bars bonded into the bed joints tie cracked brickwork back into one structure, a repair carried out from the outside, without rebuilding the wall, and finished so the crack disappears.
Brick stitching in High Wycombe
Damp repairs rarely stop at the damp. We carry out the associated building work: masonry, render, plaster, joinery repairs and making good, so the job finishes with one contractor accountable for all of it.
General building in High Wycombe
Treatment stops the damp; remedial work makes the room liveable again. Plaster, joinery, floors, decoration preparation and making good, completed by the contractor that did the specialist work, at a fixed price.

Local damp problems
The valley setting is the defining factor. Streets run up steep chalk slopes, so a great many properties have ground higher on one side than the other. Any wall holding back soil is subject to lateral water pressure, and standard damp proofing will not control that.
The building stock adds the familiar problems: ageing slate and bitumen damp proof courses, bridged interwar cavities, failed render on exposed valley-side elevations, and reduced ventilation in houses that have been reglazed and insulated.
Where a wall holds back ground on the uphill side, water arrives under pressure and produces persistent damp that needs structural waterproofing.
Rain running down steep streets and gardens collects against walls where drainage is inadequate or gullies are blocked.
Slate and bitumen damp proof courses in town-centre terraces have reached the end of their life, producing tide marks and salting.
Walls facing the prevailing weather across the valley take heavy driven rain, and cracked render or eroded pointing lets it through.
Part-buried stores in sloping-site houses are often wet and need tanking or a cavity drain membrane before they can be used.
New windows, insulation and blocked flues cut ventilation, and moisture condenses on the coldest surfaces as black mould.

In detail
The most characteristic High Wycombe job is an internal wall that is permanently damp because the ground outside is higher than the floor inside. No injected damp proof course will solve that, because the water is arriving laterally under pressure rather than rising by capillary action.
The correct approach is structural waterproofing: either a cementitious tanking system bonded to sound masonry to resist water as a barrier, or a cavity drain membrane that accepts water and directs it to a perimeter drainage channel and then to a gravity drain or a sump and pump.
Both are installed as accredited systems, with the junctions, penetrations and floor-to-wall returns detailed carefully, those details are where waterproofing fails. Waterproof paint applied to a retained wall will peel, every time.
Before specifying internal work we look at where the water is coming from. On a steep site that often means surface water crossing a garden or drive and arriving at the house, a blocked or missing gully, an undrained patio, or ground built up above the damp proof course.
Correcting levels, forming drainage channels, adding land drainage upslope and repairing gullies and rainwater goods can reduce the load on a wall dramatically, and sometimes removes the need for internal work entirely. We will tell you when that is the case.
In the older brick terraces around the town, genuine rising damp is common where the original DPC has failed: an even tide mark, salt deposits, hollow plaster and soft skirtings.
Treatment is an injected chemical damp proof course using accredited Sovereign or Wykamol systems, followed by removal of salt-contaminated plaster and salt-retardant replastering. Without the replaster, hygroscopic salts keep the surface damp no matter how well the DPC performs.
Exposed elevations here take a lot of weather, and render failure is a frequent cause of penetrating damp. We cut out debonded and cracked render, repair or renew it with a suitable system, repoint in an appropriate mix, replace spalled brick and reinstate sill and drip details.
Where masonry has cracked, through movement on the chalk, at extension junctions or over openings, helical brick stitching restores continuity and closes the water path without rebuilding the wall.
As well as High Wycombe we cover the wider Buckinghamshire area, Marlow and the Chiltern villages, Slough, Middlesex and Harrow, Watford, London, West London and Surrey.

That is lateral water pressure, not rising damp. It needs structural waterproofing; cementitious tanking or a cavity drain membrane with drainage, plus attention to external levels and drainage.
No. A chemical DPC addresses moisture rising by capillary action, not water pushing through a wall from higher ground. We will tell you that at survey rather than sell you the wrong treatment.
